Initiated in 2006 in Brunswick, Maine, Great River Zendo has been at its West Bath location since April 2011. We have a newly renovated space for the zendo itself and supporting amenities that include the Zendo Gallery and a large garden of native plants and stone--the Hill Garden. Practice at Great River adheres to traditional Soto Zen forms as established in Japan by Ehei Dogen-zenji in the 13th century. Zazen instruction for those new to this practice is available on Saturdays in West Bath.
No background in Soto Zen, Buddhism, or in sitting meditation is required: all are welcome. Although traditional zendo forms are taught and expected, other religious commitments are respected, as is secular humanism. There is no cost for sitting at either GRZ or Sitting Zen, although dana (donations) and memberships are appreciated.
The sangha (practice community) participates in liturgy and other practice-related activities and this participation is encouraged. Training in various traditional practice roles is available and organizational help is always welcomed.
Regrettably, access to GRZ requires negotiating stairs. Full handicapped access to GRZ is planned for the future, pending funding.
